There was a pause, then a sigh so irritated I almost apologized before remembering why I had called him.
“She needs her father,” I said.
Eric laughed quietly.
“Ask someone who cares. Definitely not me.”
“You chose to keep her. She’s your responsibility and your problem.”
I gripped the steering wheel.
“Eric, please.”
He chuckled.

Then he hung up.
I rang the bell and promised myself I would ask only once, calmly, for help.
I should have gone home.
