Then, one Tuesday morning in October, somebody knocked on my classroom door.
I was halfway through writing an essay prompt on the board.
« Come in. »
The door opened.
« Sorry I’m late. I’m Lily. »
Somebody knocked on my classroom door.
I turned around.
The marker slipped out of my hand.
She had dark curls pulled loosely away from her face. Gray-green eyes. A tiny crease beside the left corner of her mouth.
Then she tucked a curl behind her left ear.
