For a moment, I felt genuinely grateful that he had such a loving grandmother.
Then, by the third day, I began noticing a habit that made me increasingly uncomfortable.
Diane would take a bite of potato salad directly from the serving container, lick the spoon, and then plunge it straight back into the food.
The first time I saw her do it, I tried to remain polite.
“Diane, could you please use a separate spoon?”
She looked at me as though I’d said something ridiculous.
“Oh, sweetheart. You’d think I’d dipped it in poison! We’re family!”
I explained that I wasn’t comfortable with saliva getting into food everyone else would eat.
She laughed and waved away my concerns.
Unfortunately, it didn’t stop there.
